Air Tindi was founded by the Arychuk family, who were all born and raised in the North. Air Tindi began operation on November 01, 1988 with four aircraft and eight employees in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The name "Tindi" means Big Lake, or Great Slave Lake, in the local Dogrib tongue.
Initial success was built on the transportation of people and freight to northern communities, cabins and lodges in the remote areas North of Yellowknife. Another significant part of Air Tindi's success has been the early acquisition of experienced personnel, while procuring aircraft and equipment from other companies.
By the summer of 1992 the company was operating four twin otters on floats and was the largest float plane operator in Northern Canada; a title we still proudly hold to this day. Today, Air Tindi operates a diversified fleet of 24 aircraft and employs over 160 people. Our customers include some of the largest mining and oil companies in the world, the Government of Canada, Territorial and Provincial Governments, the US Government , aboriginal groups, residents, canoeists, hunters, trappers and many sports teams to name a few.
The company operates from 2 locations in Yellowknife. The facilities at the International airport which include 3 hangers; a private scheduled and charter passenger terminal and a cargo warehouse.
The float base location is home to the float equipped aircraft in the summer and ski equipped aircraft in the winter. The float base is also home for dispatch, finance and marketing departments.
In December of 2006, Air Tindi was sold to Discovery Air Inc. (TSX at DA.A). The original founders still maintain their same position and continue to work with Air Tindi.
